Happy Holidays! For most people, this is one of the best times of the year. It’s a time to get together and create great memories and decorate your home! Most people have a sparkly Christmas tree, but there are other ways to make your home cozy and festive. I have some tips on how to create a pop of holiday color in your living room furniture with fabric from THE DOLLAR TREE! I know you are thinking….the Dollar Tree has fabric? Yes! This is a Dollar Tree DIY hack!
Now this is such an awesome STYLE tip, because you don’t always want to spend a lot of money just for a couple months of holiday cheer. I’ve created these holiday pillow covers for under 4 dollars each! Now compare that price to the pillow covers you may find at Hobby Lobby or IKEA. You can easily spend 12-30 dollars per pillow case. If you go that route, you might as well buy an entirely new pillow. Take a look at how I made these cute pillow covers.
Step 1: Go to your nearest Dollar Tree and look for cotton place mats!
When looking for fabric in different places I always think out side of the box. For these pillowcases, I looked for holiday table place mats. I found some cotton based place mats in a great holiday pattern. It’s important to look for cotton, so it will last longer. For a medium or small couch pillow, you will need four place mats. I chose these because they are super easy to sew together. They had a few options for patterns, but I wanted a pop of red for the holidays.
Step 2: Sew them together
In this step, you are going to place two place mats together facing each other and sew straight down the longest side.
Take the next two place mats and sew down the longest side as well.
Now you should have two pairs of place mats sewn together. The next part is to sew the the two pairs all together so it makes one long piece of fabric.
Step 3: Fit a pillow inside the form of the pillow case.
Once you have sewn them all together, it should be a very long piece of fabric. Place a medium sized pillow in the center and fold over each edge of the pillow case so that it covers most of the pillow. It’s nice to find a really squishy pillow that’s easy to mold. It’s harder to do with a firm pillow.
Tip: Make sure you place the pillow on the pattern side of the fabric. Once you sew it together, you will turn in inside out! Leave a little slit in the middle. If it covers a lot of the pillow and there is too much fabric hanging over the slit, that is Ok. You can always tuck it.
Once you have placed a medium sized pillow that fits into the pillow cover, pin the edges and slowly take the pillow out. Try to keep the same form when the pillow was inside of the case.
Now you will sew the edges all the way down the longest side on both sides. Keep the same form as when the pillow was inside.
Step 4: Turn the pillow case inside out.
Once both sides are sewn down all the way, turn the pillow case inside out. Take your medium pillow and stuff it inside the slit of the case. Stuff one half of the pillow all the way to the corners of the case. Once it’s stuffed at one end, then take the other end and stuff it in the other part of the pillow case.
Viola!! Your Dollar Tree Christmas pillow case is done!!! You have some beautiful accent home decor for the holidays.
