How to Make Polymer Clay Earrings: A Quick Beginner’s Guide

Polymer clay earrings are a stylish and fun way to create unique, handcrafted accessories. Whether you're new to crafting or a seasoned artist, working with polymer clay allows for endless creativity. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to making your own polymer clay earrings!

Materials You'll Need:

✔️ Polymer clay (choose your favorite colors)
✔️ Rolling pin or acrylic roller
✔️ Earring cutters or small cookie cutters
✔️ Craft knife or blade
✔️ Sandpaper or nail buffer
✔️ Earring posts, jump rings & pliers
✔️ Oven & parchment paper
✔️ Strong jewelry glue (E6000 or UV resin)

Step 1: Condition the Clay

Start by kneading the polymer clay until it’s soft and pliable. This prevents cracking and ensures smooth designs. You can mix colors or create marbled effects by blending different shades.

Step 2: Roll and Cut Shapes

Use a rolling pin or acrylic roller to flatten the clay to your desired thickness (about ⅛ inch works best). Then, use cutters or a craft knife to create fun shapes like circles, arches, or abstract designs.

Step 3: Add Texture & Details

Get creative! Use stamps, toothpicks, or textured fabric to imprint designs. You can also layer different clay colors for a bold, modern look.

Step 4: Make Holes for Assembly

Use a toothpick or a small needle tool to create holes where you’ll attach jump rings for dangle earrings. If making studs, skip this step.

Pro tip I like to add holes afterwards as well.  I use my dremil to drill holes in each shape

Step 5: Bake the Clay

Follow the instructions on your polymer clay package, usually 275°F (130°C) for 45 minutes per ¼ inch of thickness. Place the clay on parchment paper to prevent burning.

Pro tip Another way to prevent burning is take some aluminum foil and make a tent over your earring pieces.  It keeps it from browning. 

Step 6: Sand & Assemble

Once cooled, use fine sandpaper or a nail buffer to smooth rough edges. Attach earring posts with strong glue for studs, or use jump rings and pliers to assemble dangle earrings.

Step 7: Seal (Optional)

For extra shine and durability, apply a thin coat of polymer clay glaze or UV resin. Let it dry completely before wearing.
