Why I Chose Earrings as My First Handmade Product

Why I Chose Earrings as My First Handmade Product

When I decided to open my handmade shop, I knew I had to be intentional about my first product. I wanted something that was not only beautiful and unique but also practical and accessible. My background in bridal had given me insight into the struggles of sizing—finding the perfect fit for every body type was a challenge. I wanted to avoid that hurdle altogether by choosing a one-size-fits-all fashion product. That’s when it hit me: earrings.

The Perfect First Product

Earrings checked all the right boxes for me. They are:
✔️ Universal – No worries about sizing! Anyone can wear them.
✔️ Affordable to Produce – Low overhead costs allowed me to get started without breaking the bank.
✔️ Easy to Store & Ship – Unlike bulky clothing, earrings don’t take up much space, making inventory management and shipping seamless.
✔️ Timeless – Accessories have been a staple in fashion since the beginning of time, and statement jewelry will always have a place in a woman’s wardrobe.

It was the perfect foundation for my business—something I could craft by hand, scale over time, and truly make my own.

Now people know me as the "Earring Queen." lol

Launching During the Pandemic

When I launched Style by Carise on Juneteenth in 2020, the world was going through a major shift. The pandemic had changed the way people shopped, and while I was focusing on earrings, I also saw an immediate need for stylish, functional face masks. I also added handmade masks to my shop, and it turned out to be a huge success!

On the night of my launch, I sold out completely.

That moment was surreal. It confirmed that I was on the right path, that my creative instincts and business strategy were aligned, and that my handmade designs were resonating with people.

A Business Built to Last

Starting my business with earrings allowed me to refine my craft, establish my brand, and connect with my customers in a meaningful way. From that foundation, I’ve been able to expand, evolve, and build something truly special.

Looking back, I know that choosing earrings wasn’t just a smart business decision—it was the first step in a journey that was always meant to be. And I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.

In the future I plan on expanding my handmade designs to necklaces, handbags, hair accessories and more!

If you are trying to figure out what to make and sell, just start.  Pick one product you are really good at making and start there. The rest will come to you as you go.
